Youth unemployment remains a pressing issue across many African countries, and Tanzania is no exception. In the heart of Arusha, a vibrant and densely populated region filled with talented and energetic youth, the need for job opportunity is very critical.
In response to this need, Africa Tabasamu Foundation (ATAFO) proudly launched the Binti Skills Program—an initiative designed to empower unemployed young women with practical, income-generating skills.
The program, launched in Usa River, Meru District in Arusha, is aligned with ATAFO’s broader mission of uplifting vulnerable women, children, persons with disabilities, and preserving African art and culture.
About the Program
The Binti Skills Program is a six-month vocational training initiative that targets unemployed young women, equipping them with practical skills to either enter the job market or start their own businesses. Training areas
include:
- Tailoring
- Boutique and Fashion
- Handcrafts
- Art and Cultural Practices
The program aims to train 50 young ladies each year, providing them with not only technical skills but also mentorship in entrepreneurship and financial independence.
Launch Ceremony Highlights
The launch event was a colorful occasion -attended by Distinguished representatives from government who included; Mrs. Clementina Mbise – Cultural Officer, Meru District Madam Mariam S. Kabongo – Usa River District Development Officer, Mr. Samora Mlowe – Director, Africa Tabasamu Foundation, other ATAFO officials and community members.

“ I would like to urge young ladies to be cautious and concentrate on the process of acquisition of the skills. Avoid engaging in activities which may divert your mind from achieving your goals.
Self-discipline is very important, starting from the way you dress, the way you talk and even the way you relate the rest of the team”
In his remarks, Mr. Samora Mlowe encouraged the youth to make the most of this opportunity, emphasizing the importance of applying the skills learned for personal and community development.
“Binti skills is one of the programs which focuses on young ladies specifically, however, we have other programs which incorporate the youthful men as well.
Our focus is to expand our operation and even have a cultural site within the Meru region”

Madam Mariam Kabongo highlighted the importance of cultural preservation and community support, affirming that government offices remain open for collaboration.
She also advocated for inclusivity, encouraging that future phases of the program consider the involvement of young men as well.
“The governments doors are open for any support that you may need. We like youths who are engaged in development.
We do appreciate youth groups who are making efforts in bring change to the society.”
