Who Are We
African Tabasamu Foundation (ATAFO) is a registered non-governmental organization established in Tanzania in 2020 and registered under the Ministry of Community Development, Gender and Special Groups with Registration Number OONGO/R/17/1795.
ATAFO was founded on the belief that culture is more than a symbol of identity it is a powerful tool for education, economic empowerment and sustainable community development. We work with children, youth, women and local communities to unlock opportunities through arts, culture, skills development and community-based programmes that improve lives and create lasting impact.
Our approach combines traditional knowledge with practical skills, education and strategic partnerships to empower communities while preserving Tanzania’s rich cultural heritage for future generations.
Our Story
Every community has untapped potential. Across Tanzania, many young people possess remarkable talent, creativity and determination, yet they often lack access to opportunities that allow them to transform these abilities into sustainable livelihoods. At the same time, valuable cultural traditions and indigenous knowledge continue to face the risk of being lost.
African Tabasamu Foundation was established to bridge this gap by connecting culture with education, entrepreneurship and community development. Since its establishment in 2020, ATAFO has continued to create opportunities that strengthen communities while promoting cultural heritage, social inclusion and economic empowerment.
Through community engagement, practical training, volunteer participation and collaborative partnerships, ATAFO continues to build pathways that enable individuals to develop skills, improve their livelihoods and contribute positively to their communities.

Arts and Culture
Arts and culture are at the heart of everything we do. We preserve and promote Tanzania’s cultural heritage while creating opportunities for young people to transform artistic skills into sustainable livelihoods.
Education
Education is integrated into all our programmes. We provide learning opportunities on arts and crafts, culture, patriotism and life skills that empower participants with practical knowledge for personal and community development.
Health
Healthy communities are productive communities. ATAFO provides awareness and education on mental health as well as sexual and reproductive health to young people and community members, helping them make informed decisions and improve their overall well-being.
Environment
Environmental conservation is essential for sustainable development. Our environmental programmes include tree planting, community clean-up campaigns and awareness creation to encourage environmental protection and responsible use of natural resources.
Children Development
Children represent the future of every community. ATAFO equips children with practical skills through arts and crafts programmes that nurture creativity, build confidence and prepare them for future economic opportunities.
Youth Empowerment
Youth empowerment remains one of our core priorities. We provide life skills education, identify economic opportunities within communities and support young people in developing sustainable livelihoods through culture, entrepreneurship and practical skills.
Our Ongoing Programmes
ATAFO continues to implement programmes that address community needs while creating sustainable opportunities for future generations.
Tailoring Programme
Established in 2023, the Tailoring Programme provides free vocational training to girls from disadvantaged backgrounds, helping them acquire practical skills that promote economic independence and long-term self-reliance.
Skills Training for Children
This programme develops children’s talents through creative learning, arts and crafts. It prepares young people with practical skills that can become alternative sources of income and lifelong opportunities.
Traditional Dance Programme
Traditional dance is an important part of preserving Tanzania’s cultural identity. Through this programme, young people learn traditional dances while discovering economic opportunities connected to culture and tourism.
Youth Development Programme
We work with young people from challenging backgrounds by providing life skills, mentorship and opportunities that help them recognise and utilise resources available within their communities.
Environmental Programme
Our environmental initiatives include tree nurseries, tree planting campaigns and environmental awareness activities that encourage communities to conserve and protect the natural environment.
Community Health Programme
ATAFO provides health education focused on mental health and sexual and reproductive health, addressing some of the most pressing challenges affecting young people and communities today.

ATAFO works closely with government institutions, non-governmental organizations, community groups, educational institutions, volunteers and development partners to design and implement programmes that respond to real community needs.
